Handmade Gemstone Jewelry - the healing power of gemstones

I'm often asked to recommend gemstones or to make gemstone jewelry to help a person who is in a particular situation, or who has a particular health problem. I do believe in the healing power of gemstones. I have felt the effects of gemstones myself on my own state of being. One time I went through about 10 days of feeling agitated. During that time I picked up some flame jasper beads (above) and held them in my hands and absent mindedly played with them. After about 5 minutes I felt much calmer than I had in days. A few days later I learned that I was taking too much thyroid medication, lowered my dose, and I no longer felt agitated. Feelings of agitation are one of the many symptoms caused by too much thyroid. Placebo effect? In this case I don't think so. I was not expecting to feel different in any way by playing with some beads, which is the theory of the placebo effect.

 

Throughout history gems have been used for their healing powers, among other uses. Just like medicinal herbs, which throughout history were used and were very effective, gemstones were used also, although I suspect that some uses were based on superstition. I really doubt that aquamarine has the power to save a sailor in a typhoon, for example. But maybe it does in some way, who am I to say?

 

It is said that everything, everyone has a vibration, even if it's very subtle. Ever notice that by being with a hyperactive person, we feel more hyperactive? Or by being with a person who is very laid back we feel the same way? I think gems have vibrations too, and I believe that by being in contact with them we can change our own vibration.

 

I don't make jewelry purely for healing purposes. There are several people online who do. I really like gemstones for several reasons. I like rocks that look like rocks - really - jewelry that looks like it was made from a rock from the back yard. And I like rocks that are rare and incredibly beautiful. They're all a part of nature, like the woods and open fields near where I live, like the hawk circling in the sky looking for lunch, like you and me. I like gemstones because they feel good and are natural art.

 

I guess we all love this planet we live on, this Earth, and feel a strong connection to it. Gemstones are just a beautiful form given to us by this Earth.
