Garnets could be considered a much undervalued gem. There are many varieties of garnet, and personally, I have never met a garnet I didn't like! My personal favorite is rhodolite garnet, which is a deep raspberry color, then there's purple grape garnet, and mandarin garnet, which is a nice subtle orange, not surprisingly resembling a mandarin orange. Tsavorite and demantoid garnets are lime green. Then there is what I think of as a generic garnet - a pretty deep red garnet. Nothing special - just a nice, red garnet.

Depending on the rarity of the variety of garnet and other factors garnets can be quite expensive, or inexpensive. Most garnets are not color treated in any way. This alone makes them special. The name "garnet" has been used through antiquity and comes from the Latin word "granatium" which means "pomegranate", because small garnet crystals resembled pomegranate seeds. With all the varieties of garnet they are found almost everywhere in the world!

The world's biggest garnet was found in Australia in 1996. It weighed thousands of pounds and was almost 100 feet across!

As for the healing aspects of garnet, it is said that it purifies and balances energy, that it can bring order to chaos, brings inner strength and inspires love and devotion.I personally like garnets because they're sweet. Don't ask me why, but they are!

Garnet is a fairly hard stone, with a hardness of 6 to 7.5 on the Moh's scale of hardness.
