Some Sonoma History

My husband and I moved to Sonoma from San Francisco in 1993. We both loved Sonoma, and always wanted to move here. When we finally had our chance, we took it! Sonoma is a small town. It's officially called The City of Sonoma, but when people refer to "The City" around here, they mean San Francisco. The area has changed a bit since we moved here, like everywhere else. It's become a little more crowded, a little more yuppified, but it's still paradise!

The City of Sonoma is in Sonoma Valley, dubbed "The Valley of the Moon" by writer Jack London, who lived part of his life in the Valley. From just about anywhere in town you can see the Mayacamas and Sonoma Mountain ranges. Sonoma is rich in California history. In the center of town is the "Plaza", the largest town square in California, a beautiful city park with many varieties of trees, a duck pond, fountains and more. City Hall is located in the Plaza. Surrounding the Plaza are numerous historic buildings which house shops, hotels and restaurants. Sonoma is recognized as the birthplace of the California wine industry. There is much of interest here and I'll tell you about a couple of neat things.

The Sonoma Mission, founded July 4 1823 is the northernmost mission in what was the California Mission system.

Soon after the mission was built it was secularized by the Mexican government under the supervision of General Mariano Vallejo. Vallejo built army barracks very close to the mission. Above is a picture of the interior of the barracks that housed Vallejo's troops. Interesting links:Jack London State ParkSonoma Visitors Bureau
