While aventurine occurs in a variety of colors, it's usually light to medium green, the color of new Spring. Orange and blue aventurine are also seen once in a while. There are other colors of aventurine, but they are rarely seen.

The color of green aventurine comes from fuschite, which is chromium rich. The fuschite is finely included in the quartz, which is why aventurine is sometimes considered a "rock", because it is technically a form of two minerals. For practical purposes the experts consider aventurine to be a form of quartz or chalcedony.

Aventurine sometimes has a shimmering quality, called "aventurescense", which is caused by inclusions. The degree of shimmering depends on the density of the inclusions. The color of green aventurine ranges from very dark green and very dense, to very light, delicate green that is almost clear.

Aventurine was found in the 18th century by Venetian glass workers. The name "aventurine" is from the Italian words "a" and "ventura" which means "by chance".

As for the metaphysical qualities of aventurine, it is considered a very lucky gemstone indeed. It is called the "Stone of Opportunity" and is considered the luckiest of all crystals. It is said to manifest prosperity and wealth and to allign conditions so that opportunity is inevitable. It also replaces old patterns so new growth can take place.

Aventurine is mined in many locations around the world. It is a fairly hard gemstone,  7 on the Mohs scale of hardness, with 10 being the hardest.
