I've always thought of green moss agate as a very special stone. Especially good quality moss agate. It is said by some experts that technically moss agate is not an agate because it's not banded, that it's a form of chalcedony (a form of quartz), with green inclusions. But all agates are a form of chalcedony. They're all in the same family, so it's kind of splitting hairs.
When you hold a green moss agate stone to the light you can see mineral formations that look like green moss inside the stone. These formations have a lacy appearance. As with many other stones the beauty of moss agate can often be best seen in larger stones.
Agates form in a slow process that can take millions of years. Layers and layers form as the result of geologic events. This process gives agates their banded or lacy properties.
It is said that green moss agate is the most powerful of all agates. It is said to bring abundance, success and prosperity. It is also said to improve one's connection to nature and to help detoxify impurities. It is also protective.
Moss agate is mined in Wyoming, South Dakota and Montana. India also produces very nice moss agate.
Moss agate is 7 on the Moh's scale of hardness, with 10 being the hardest.
