Sonoma Plaza - General Joseph Hooker House

Down an alley in a courtyard at the northeast corner of Sonoma Plaza is the General Joseph Hooker house, which was recently reconstructed and renamed by the Sonoma League for Historic Preservation.

 

General Joseph Hooker (1814-1879) led a rather colorful life. He was from Massachusetts, graduated from West Point, and fought in the Mexican-American War and the American Civil War, along with other distinguished military service. During the 1850s General Hooker settled in Sonoma and tried his hand at politics and agriculture, although he was often waylaid by gambling and drinking. He had this house built on the other side of the Plaza. It was subsequently moved to its current location.
